From East to Westie

For this week's drawing I wanted to recreate a drawing of a Westie (West Highland White Terrier). To some people that topic might sound a bit out of the ordinary or random but I am not new to creating art work featuring Westies. I actually have a Westie and his name is Arnold. When my family first got him around 10 plus years ago, he was going to be strictly my dog. My parents thought it would teach me responsibility to own a pet, meaning I would take him out, train him, walk him, and so on and so forth. Well, when we picked him up from the breeder and took him in the car, I instantly wanted to hold him. He cried so much that it terrified me so I handed him over to my mom....and instantly he was quiet. This moment perfectly sums up our relationship to this day. Although, when my mom isn't home, I'm second best. He's a sweet dog, and everyone thinks he's super adorable but he and I have always had somewhat of a love-hate relationship.

Here's a picture of Arnold--he loves the camera!

As I said earlier, I am not new to incorporating Westies into my art work. In fact, last school year I took a painting class and for my final project, as well as being a late birthday gift for my mom, I created a Westie portrait resembled after Arnold. I received quite a bit of praise from it and to date it's still one of my favorite paintings I've ever done. Here's a picture of the final project below:

We're off to a good start!

I made his (I'm gonna call this drawing him because I modeled it slightly after my dog) ears slightly large because my dog has really big ears, and his left ear is floppy.

I added some color! I didn't want this week's drawing to be "boring" and I love when I see artists create animal portraits using color. The concept has always intrigued me so I figured I would do the same!

The finished product! A very full-faced Westie with big ears--sounds like Arnold to the T!

Overall I like how this week's drawing turned out. I was excited to draw my dog because I have done it before and wanted to improve while changing something completely different (adding color). However, I'm stumped as to what I am going to draw next week! I think I'm going to let it be a surprise this time. Possibly something Halloween-ish? We shall see!
