Prismacolor Your Life

Hi everyone! Hello to the all the people reading, and to all the people who are reading this and not just skimming just to look at the photos--thank you! Before I get into what I'm going to be creating for my first drawing, lets discuss a little background about this blog and my past experiences with blogging. I have been blogging and writing online journals since I was about eleven. So that's about nine years of spending many an hour on the internet. It's been a lot of fun but I will not lie when I say that my blog posts have been more about venting my daily feelings than writing anything entirely interesting. However, I plan on making this blog about something interesting, or at least something that truly interests me.

Since I was young, I've loved to draw. I remember being in kindergarten and my teacher, Mrs. Lewis, would ask us to draw different things and I would get praised for how well I, even at five, drew people's faces. While other kids were drawing stick figures, misshapen and wonky, I wanted to draw as perfect as possible. I'm also a professional doodler (only in my own mind). During class I was so often distracted that anyone near me could just look over at my paper and see all the little drawings and doodles I had created in a few minutes time. I would doodle on anything, too. It ranged from scrap paper, napkins, homework, to even myself; I was endlessly drawing.

Jumping forward about fifteen years, I am now twenty, a college junior and my love for drawing has not ended, not surprisingly. I still doodle, except now I try not to doodle on any important papers or assignments. My blog's purpose is to take inspiration from other drawings I find online and create them into something I can call my own, without directly copying them. Harvey Fierstein, an American actor and playwright, said "art has the power to transform, to illuminate, to educate, inspire and motivate." That's exactly what this blog is about! I hope to inspire and educate you about the pieces I have chosen to recreate, and I hope motivate you readers to create some stuff of your own!

Now that we have the introduction finished, how about we start off with the format of this blog? Each week I will be creating one finished drawing of my choice. Every week, there will be a new topic and description of why I chose to recreate the drawing I picked. Sound good? I also will only be using three different tools:

  • Regular pencils
  • Sharpie fine-tip markers (if need be)
  • Prismacolor Premier Soft Core pencils, 72 count

I am new to using Prismacolor pencils but had my eye on them for years. They blend so beautifully and when my parents surprised me with them as a gift for my birthday this past August, I was ecstatic! Prismacolor Soft Core pencils come in sets of 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 96, 132, and 150. I'm completely happy with the 72 set since it includes a wide array of different colors. Just imagine having 150 different shades to choose from...okay, that sounds awesome but still--I'm super happy with my set!

See you guys next week when I take inspiration from ~Polaara from DeviantArt's drawing of an eye. I have even linked a video down below of her drawing it! I have an interesting story about drawing eyes but I'll save that for next week!
